Update Postulates without Inertia
Starting from Katsuno and Mendelzon postulates, a new set of postulates which is minimal and complete has been deened, these postulates characterize an update operator. The update operator class which is obtained is larger than Katsuno and Mendelzon's one, since it includes updating operators which are not inert, and which allow for the existence of unreachable states. The main property is that...
متن کاملJet propulsion without inertia
A body immersed in a highly viscous fluid can locomote by drawing in and expelling fluid through pores at its surface. We consider this mechanism of jet propulsion without inertia in the case of spheroidal bodies and derive both the swimming velocity and the hydrodynamic efficiency. Elementary examples are presented and exact axisymmetric solutions for spherical, prolate spheroidal, and oblate ...
متن کاملTransient growth without inertia
We study transient growth in inertialess plane Couette and Poiseuille flows of viscoelastic fluids. For streamwise-constant three-dimensional fluctuations, we demonstrate analytically the existence of initial conditions that lead to quadratic scaling of both the kinetic energy density and the elastic energy with the Weissenberg number, We. This shows that in strongly elastic channel flows of vi...
متن کاملEffect of particle inertia on turbulence in a suspension.
We propose a one-fluid analytical model for a turbulently flowing dilute suspension, based on a modified Navier-Stokes equation with a k-dependent effective density of suspension rho(eff)(k) and an additional damping term proportional, variant gamma(p)(k), representing the fluid-particle friction (described by Stokes law). The statistical description of turbulence within the model is simplified...
متن کاملJune 1995 PUPT-1546 TURBULENCE WITHOUT PRESSURE
We develop exact field theoretic methods to treat turbulence when the effect of pressure is negligible. We find explicit forms of certain probability distributions, demonstrate that the breakdown of Galilean invariance is responsible for intermit-tency and establish the operator product expansion. We also indicate how the effects of pressure can be turned on perturbatively.
